Who we are

The Chauncy Maples Malawi Trust was established in UK in 2009 to raise £2 million to renovate the ship into a clinic. Any surplus funds raised will be used to manage the ship.

Patrons

  • The Rt Rev Donald Arden is the nephew of the engineer who oversaw the building of the Chauncy Maples. He was the Archbishop of Central Africa and blessed the ship after her last major refit in 1967.
  • His Excellency the High Commissioner of Malawi to Great Britain, Dr Francis Moto.
  • Kit Hesketh-Harvey, a British composer, scriptwriter and comic performer of Kit and the Widow, who was born in Malawi.

The Chauncy Maples project in Malawi

  • The Chauncy Maples Trust has been registered as an NGO In Malawi to raise fuinds and awareness in country. The trustees are Carrie Osborne; Janie Hampton; Alimon Alfred Mwase BSc MA, an economist for the World Bank and former President of the Economics Association of Malawi; and Dumisani Chisala BSc, the Vice-President of the Association of Professional Chemists & Chemical Engineers in Malawi.
  • Sanderson Kuyeli, is the Director of Infrastructure, Ministry of Health, Lilongwe.
  • Captain Tasiyana Kamanga is the Chief Surveyor of Vessels, Ministry of Transport & Public Works, Lilongwe.
  • Martha Mondiwa is the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Nurses and Midwifery Council, Lilongwe.
  • Ross Girdler, BSc, is the Project Manager in Malawi, and has worked in Tanzania and South Africa as a marine engineer.

  • Davenport Lyons is a leading business law firm in London.
  • Pieter Volschenk is a marine architect for Naval Africa Design, Durban, South Africa.
  • Professor Chris Lavy, OBE MD MCh FCS FRCS, is visiting professor at the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Oxford, and honorary chair at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the University of Malawi. He oversaw the building of an orthopaedic teaching hospital and research centre with Cure International in Malawi.
  • Paul Simon has worked for Save the Children, Oxfam, UN, European Union and OSCE in Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia.
  • Martin Francis is a leading architect and yacht designer, his company Francis Design is based in the South of France.
  • Tim Healing PhD, FSB, CBIOL, DipClinMicro, DMCC is an epidemiologist with expertise in tropical diseases, who has much experience of working in tropical Africa (with NGOs and with the World Health Organisation).

Trustees

The Trustees of the Chauncy Maples Malawi Trust are all dedicated to the improvement of health for Malawian people. They bring together over 200 years of experience working in health care, shipping and international development.

  • Belinda Coote has been a Country Director for Oxfam; Chief Executive of Medical Aid for Palestinians and Latitude Global Volunteering; and is now CEO of AMREF UK.
  • Nilesh Goswami, the chairman, is an economist and management consultant who has worked in the public sector and the NHS for 25 years, and for many charities including VSO in Zambia and Malawi.
  • Founder and Executive Director, Janie Hampton, BA (Human Sciences), MSc (International Health) has planned health projects in Africa, South America and the Pacific; and worked with the Ministry of Health in Malawi on several projects.
  • Fundraising Director, Mark Holford is a lawyer and the Director of Corporate Responsibility for Thomas Miller, the Trust's Sponsor.
  • Jane Moore RN, MPH (Liverpool STM) pioneered the hospice movement in Kenya and has worked in Africa for Oxfam, Save the Children, Merlin, and is a trustee of RedR.
  • Carrie Osborne, BSc (Human Biology), MSc (Community Health in Developing Countries) is a Chartered Biologist, public health consultant and farmer near Monkey Bay.
  • John Hynan is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. He has been director of several public companies operating in the insurance industry and is on the board of charitable trusts.
